Freeway II
Powakaddy have just launched their latest electric golf trolley in 2009 in the form of the Freeway II. There was massive anticipation for Powakaddys latest model and with GPS devices becoming more popular it was inevitable that the worlds leading brand were going to jump on the band wagon and integrate one with a trolley. As the Freeway II is integrating the GPS device with a golf trolley it will set you back more than the Freeway and the Classic Legend with prices starting at £450 ranging to £850 depending on model.
Powakaddy have really thought about the design of the Freeway II as they have made it stylish and elegant while it maintains its strong, sturdy, light weight frame. You can get the Freeway II in either black or white and truth be told it looks stunning in white. Not only does the frame of the Freeway II look stylish, it comes with sports wheels as standard and this certainly adds to its great looking appearance. You always find with sports wheels that it gives better stability to the golf trolley and that’s exactly what we found, even on tough terrain.
The Freeway II is simple to assemble and unassembled in 3 easy steps. We found the Freeway II easiest to assemble out of all of Powakaddys electric golf trolleys, so that is good news if you don’t know your left hand from your right hand when it comes to assembling things. The battery sits quite discretely between the two sport wheels and with the Freeway II you have the choice of a traditional acid battery or your more modern lithium battery. We will go into more detail about the different battery types further down. Just like every other Powakaddy electric golf trolley the Freeway II folds down into a compact size and can be stored away into small spaces and will fit easily into most car boots. However we tried to store the Freeway II into the back of a Mini boot, to see how compact it was, but we were just pushing our luck with that challenge.

The handle and the control panel of the Freeway II is more like a games console than controls for an electric golf trolley. The handle is has a boomerang shape to it and can be used comfortably with a right or left handed golfer.

Now the control panel of the Freeway II is one of the coolest things about any electric gold trolley we have tried. Just like Motocaddys S5 it has a multi function touch screen control panel with features including distance functions, speed gauge, battery life indicator and digital clock. All are pretty self explanatory but the distance functions have many features to it. There is your simple digital speed gauge that you can control and choose from 9 speeds of what speed you want the trolley to travel at. Just like the Freeway you can choose a distance setting to set the golf trolley off in one direction for a distance up to 15, 30 or 45 yards before it comes to a stop. There is a distance measuring feature that can measure the distance between shots and can also measure your total distance covered for your round in either KPH or MPH. This certainly comes in handy if you want to get accurate distances so you know how far you have to hit your next shot. Some courses are starting to relax their rules when it comes to distance measuring systems but most still ban them when playing competitions so the Freeway II has the option to disable the distance measuring feature when playing competitions.
Just like the Freeway Powakaddy have given the Freeway II an almost silent drive and gear unit; it is a sealed unit which makes maintenance free. You can hear a slight noise off of the trolley when it is coming to a halt but when you are walking down the fairway you wouldn’t know it was an electric golf trolley.
Where the power comes from with the Freeway II is what varies the prices of the Freeway II considerably. You can choose from a standard, traditional acid battery which will set you back anywhere from £450 to £500. But if you choose to go for your more modern lithium battery this will set you back anywhere from £730 to £850.
If you decide to go for your traditional acid battery it comes in either a 26 AH 18 hole battery or a 33AH 36 hole battery. Each battery comes with its own specially designed charger. Each battery will do a good job but we would always recommend to go for the 36 hole battery as you can guarantee you will get a better life span from it than you would the 18 hole battery. The 36 hole battery is slightly lighter than the 18 hole battery.
If you are looking for the latest technology when you purchase an electric golf trolley and price is not a problem then you have to get the Freeway II with the lithium battery. The battery only weighs 2.5kg which is 75% less than the acid battery. Power will not be a problem as the lithium battery has long power life. To purchase the Freeway II with the lithium battery it will cost somewhere in the region of £750.

Powacaddy did not stop with just a lithium battery they have also introduced an electronic breaking system. The digital breaking system (DBS) gives three levels of progressive breaking for greater downhill control. This is the top of the range Freeway II and is at the top end price of around £850.
We think the Freeway II is a great golf trolley and a fantastic addition to the Powacaddy range. As you can purchase three different specifications for the Freeway II the control features remain the same which makes us come to the conclusion that opting for the traditional acid battery at around £500 is a good choice. Although if you are in the fortunate position and don’t consider the price as an obstacle then definitely go for the top of the range Freeway II Lithium Brake at around £850.
